The Road to Leadership Starts With One Young Man's Decision to Rise
Devin Johnson is 15 years old.
He wrestles, swims, and plays basketball. His favorite subject is Chemistry. He plans to become one of the richest pilots in Baltimore. And he has been putting in the work at I AM MENtality for over four years.
That is not an accident. It is what happens when a young man is given the right environment, the right tools, and people in his corner who take him seriously.
What I AM MENtality Actually Does
I AM MENtality is a Baltimore-based youth mentorship organization serving young men ages 8 to 18. Through mentoring, leadership development, financial literacy, workforce readiness, and health and wellness programming, the mission is simple: enlighten the minds of male youth and prepare them to lead.
The young men in the program are not just participants. They are youth leaders. Some are compensated for project work. All of them are in financial literacy sessions learning to budget, save, and understand money in real terms. The goal is not to teach theory. The goal is to hand them skills they can use before they graduate high school.
Young men who invest in their communities early do not wait for someone to hand them a future. They build one. That is the belief behind everything I AM MENtality does.
Devin's Own Words
Devin does not talk about his goals the way most teenagers do. He talks about them like they are already in motion.
"My goals in life are to become one of the richest pilots in Baltimore. My goal is to be financially and mentally stable. To become successful and become a better person. Handling what I have to handle as a man and take the things I learn from I AM MENtality and use it to better myself."
He also understands something that takes most adults years to figure out.
"You have to follow to become a better leader. Surround yourself with people who are doing better things. The people you think are nerds are probably people you should spend more time around and learn from."
That kind of clarity does not come from nowhere. It comes from four years of consistent investment in who he is.
A Mother Who Wanted More for Her Son
Sonya Armstrong enrolled her son Devin in I AM MENtality because she wanted him to be a great leader. She has watched him become one.
"I want my son to be someone. His name will stand out for him being a great man."
Sonya's trust in this organization runs deep enough that her grandson Baden is now an I AM MENtality youth leader too. She encourages every young man in her family to get involved.
That kind of word-of-mouth is not marketing. It is what happens when a program actually delivers.
Parents do not refer their grandchildren to organizations they do not fully trust. Sonya did. That says everything.
The Bigger Picture
Devin is one of more than 400 young men enrolled in I AM MENtality programming across Baltimore. Each one comes with a different story, a different starting point, and a different set of challenges. What they share is this: someone decided to show up for them.
Baltimore has no shortage of young men with drive and potential. What they need are structured opportunities to develop it. Leadership skills. Financial knowledge. Mentors who stay. A program that meets them where they are instead of where it is convenient.
That is the road to leadership I AM MENtality is building. One young man at a time.
How You Can Be Part of This
The work Devin is doing did not happen in isolation. It took a program. It took mentors. It took funding. If you believe Baltimore's young men deserve that kind of investment, there are two ways to act on it.
